I have been searching for a way to enhance my classic winter cocktail standby, the Manhattan. This cocktail is difficult to modify, because with the correct ingredients, it is perfect. My favorite version is made with Old Overholt Rye Whiskey, Punt e Mes vermouth, and Bittercube Cherry Vanilla Bitters. A Manhattan is the perfect companion to long late winter sunsets and endless games of cribbage. The Portage is my reinterpretation of the Manhattan, using Woodford Reserve Bourbon, Ruby Port in place of sweet vermouth, maple syrup, and Fee Brother’s Walnut Bitters.
I highly suggest snowshoeing the rugged, wind whipped, and snowy terrain surrounding the shores of Cross Lake before you kick off your boots, light a fire, and thaw your icy limbs with this delicious cocktail.
