Notebooks!

Notebooks have become a part of my life in a major way. I live with a notebook, I carry it around the house from room-to-room and if it’s not nearby I get panicky. Maybe it’s because I’ve entered the stage of life where so much is going on that I can’t keep anything straight. If I have an idea I need to write it down before it passes, because it will pass. I also write lists, lots and lots of lists. From blog ideas, to shopping lists, to sketches, to floor plans, and website redesigns. I’m tearing through notebooks like nobody’s business and I need something new. I would love to get a notebook with tons of pages that would take me forever to fill. Most importantly I want it to feel good, like a soft covered book that you can bend in half, or a record with a really nice matte sleeve. If it doesn’t feel good, I won’t use it. I always love a good moleskine, and am considering getting another “batch” of them, but I’d also like to branch out and try something new. Anyone out there have a unhealthy relationship with their notebook too? Do you have any recommendaishes for me?

Here are a few of my favs:

Boring and classic, but I like the black hardcover moleskins (5″ x 8 1/4″), with the squared pattern. They have a pocket at the back which is amazing for bits of paper and receipts, and the grid pattern works well for sketches and for writing.

They’re a bit expensive, but buying a new notebook is such a treat that I don’t mind if it’s a tad more pricey.

One day I hope to have a shelf with all of my old ones lined up, dated along the spines. Yep, I’m a nerd!

Yeah, Moleskines, ahh. I just might have to go that route again. I alway get three packs of the large thin style but in kraft paper covers. I like the paper and I like that they are flexible. I might have to look and see if they have softcover books with more pages, similar to what you like to get. I don’t mind paying for them as long as they’re perfect.

I would feel so proud of myself if I could fill a bookshelf full of notebooks, you’re so not a nerd, that would be super cool.

I love the Greenroom products from Target- they are simple indesign, yet offer great style in numerous sizes. I am on my third agenda book from the line! They are a must buy!

Thanks for the suggestion Graham. I will totally check those out.

Even though I am never far from my laptop, Ipad and droid, my notebook is also never far from reach. In fact, it is not a-typical for a husband-wife date to involve going out for beer and pizza and working in our respective notebooks if we’re planning a trip or a party. We get weird looks when we run into people we know, but whatever. I have had about every notebook under the sun, but the Ikea Frusen spiral notebooks have become my go-to and I just picked up extras so we can have them in multiple locations. Currently they come in silver with snowflakes, but the colors change every season or two, and they cry out for decoration, stickers, etc. They aren’t fancy, soft covers, but they have big, plain white sheets of paper and lie flat with the spiral for maximum use of each page. As they get filled up, they become a scrapbook of all of the dinners we’ve planned, parties we’ve thrown and trips we’ve taken, right along side the grocery shopping lists, garden planning and window measurements. And you can’t beat the price: http://www.ikea.com/us/en/catalog/products/00237615/

      Hey Meg!

I had no idea that Ikea sold notebooks. It’s blowing my mind a little, and you’re right, you can’t beat the price.

I love what you said about notebooks being scrapbooks, that sentiment is so true! So sweet.

I will def keep my eyes peeled for these next time I’m out at my favorite place.

In Bloomington, you will find them right at the end of the kids section/right at the top of the stairs along with some travel bags, mini-staplers, etc. There are several sizes. Again, they’re no moleskin, but I think they’re the best.
