A new plate arrived in the mail today! It’s been a few years since I have added to my small but perfectly sized little vintage Minnesota plate collection. I got nudged by a friend last weekend during our cabin getaway trip:
“Hey why don’t you have a Cross Lake plate?”
“Well, I’ve only had about 3 cabin cocktails, here’s my phone, let me get on Etsy and make that right”.
What? Isn’t that how you shop for stuff?
5 minutes later this little beauty was ordered up and I it only cost me 8 virtual bucks. I suppose the damage could have been worse, all things considered.
She fits right in with the rest of the collection and I like the gold around the edges. I’m happy to have her hanging with the rest of the gang.
Are you, or have you considered starting a plate collection? Well, let me nudge you a long! It’s really easy to get one going! All you need is a few favorite plates, anything will do; new, old, vintage, patterned, plain, dirty, whatever. What’s important is that you like it. You’ll also need some plate hangers, grab some the next time you’re out at ye olde hardware store, that’s where I always get mine. The plate hangers attach to your plate using springs and tension (woah). They come in 3 sizes; small medium and large. I use the medium size for these regular sized dinner plates. Then put a nail in yer wall, and hang. Easy!
Love it! Or grab a friend’s phone if your’s is out of batteries!
Oh yeah, I did do that. Whoops. It was probably more like 5 cabin cocktails at that point, wasn’t it?
So fun! I have started a little collection of plates for some dining room decor in the new house…where do you find most of yours? Online or in thrift shops?
Glad to hear you have a collection going too. I’ve got a post in the works scheduled for tomorrow all about where I find my plates. It’s a big secret, but I find them all on etsy…
cute! love these plates!
Thanks Abby!
Ah! You have no idea how much this is up my alley. I have displayed plates on my walls as far back as my first college apartment in 1999. I mostly collect red and white transferware-style plates (both tourist style and just designs) and I have become very picky about what I buy and display since I’ve been collecting so long. I also have a box full of state plates that is currently being stored at my parents house that I bought at a junk shop in Northern, MN. The next time I go visit my folks, I’m going to pull it out. Hopefully it is a goldmine that I should be displaying or selling on etsy. And yes, my plate collection one of the thousand things I’ve been meaning to blog about for ages, as soon as I have time. You can catch a tiny preview of the collection on display in our diningroom, here: http://instagram.com/p/QxX19yL2ig/
Awh, your plate collection is beautiful! I’m excited to see more. It sounds like you could have a huge score with those slate plates, you’ll have to go check on ’em soon. I love plates on walls, it’s such a good way to add personality and artwork to a wall, and for a very minimal investment. I picked up my plate hangers for 89 cents at the hardware store, it doesn’t get much better.
Thanks for saying they look pretty! It is one of those things that I happened on because I found one cool plate, then my Grandma gave me a platter, and one thing lead to another. I am antsy about seeing the state plates. As I recall, most of them are probably not super high-quality souvenirs, but even if one or two are neat, I’ll be happy. Pinterest has re-invigorated my plate-hanging obsession. So many ideas…
