Deuce Cities Henhouse

Holy crap. That’s what I say to myself as I scroll through this amazing four square home of Hillary and Jim Straatman, designed by Lisa Staton and photographed by Haris Kenjar. Have you ever had that experience with inspirational images? It’s only happened to me a handful of times where something I see hits me like a ton of bricks. This is probably three tons of inspiration all at once! READ MORE

Building a Raised Bed Garden

Gardening Basics : Building a Raised Bed Garden

Hey Guys! It's finally feeling like spring is happening here in the midwest. Trees are budding, grass is greening up and everyday I spy more and more plants in my yard that are poking through the dirt. It's all really exciting, and is by far my favorite time of year ...
Hiding Cords and Cables

The Hidden Cord

Ha, if you thought this post was about Minneapolis' very own 90's-indie-rock band, The Hidden Chord, I really got you fooled. Props to those who got the very obscure reference, to the majority of you who have no idea what I am talking about, I sincerely apologize. This post is ...
My April Garden

My April Garden

Jacob's Ladder Hello from the land of viral pneumonia and snow flurries. The kids and I are all super sick because we just had to end the cold & flu season with one more major illness. We started spring with a bang, and by bang I don't mean excitement and ...
Bruce Getaway : Atlanta

Bruce Getaway : Atlanta

Jeff and I took a quick getaway this weekend to see Bruce Springsteen in Atlanta. It had been 18 months since the last time we had seem him. It's obvious that Bruce doesn't have his priorities straight. I mean, he's spent that entire 18 months touring the globe, and it ...
A Gardner's Wish List

A Gardner’s Wish List (psst – For Yer Mom)

I don't know about you guys, but there is nothing I like receiving more for Mother's Day then large bags of black mulch. I spent Mother's Day last year knee deep in mulch, and I couldn't have been happier. Although I do like mulch very, very much, I do have ...
Horizontal Slatted Fence

Fence in Progress : Part 2

Guys! The fence is like, technically done, but (and that's a big but) I didn't want to call it the official 'after' just yet - there is still work to be done, people! In case you didn't notice, Minnesota is probably the last state out of all 50 of them ...
Fence Installation

Fence in Progress : Part 1

Guys! I'm am so stoked! The old plastic slatted green chain link fence is gone, and the new horizontal slatted cedar fence is being installed. You all know how much I love my flower beds - I hated seeing them against that green plastic fence backdrop, they deserved better - ...

Hi! I’m Alison Allen

I started Deuce Cities Henhouse in 2009 – a blog about fixing up and restoring my 110-year-old Minneapolis home and updating our worn out and out, dated Wisconsin cabin. My family and I (my husband and two boys) moved into our current home nearly ten years ago, and since then I’ve been chronicling my journey of owning, renovating, decorating and DIY-ing our home.

I’m passionate about empowering women to take on projects that they might have normally not had the confidence to do, incorporating modern design and aesthetic into my home, thoughtful design solutions, and landscaping. I’ve done it all, from easy do-it-yourself home improvement projects to full on renovations and remodels.
